Rise Above was an early attempt to combine the musical grammar of Rock & Roll with some architectural elements of Classical music. This idea would emerge again in the author's career in more mature works such as Tone Poem From a Lost Son. Rise Above was inspired in part by Mason Williams' 1968 hit Classical Gas, but with a slightly "harder" approach to the guitar work and the percussion.
